Google is cracking down on pop-ups

Google have got themselves a new logo and now a new set of rules, changing the algorithms for their rankings again.

Google will start to penalise the search rankings of websites that use pop-up mobile ads asking users to install an app, the latest move by the company that could have a big impact on advertisers, publishers and other content creators.

In their latest blog post they said, “Our analysis shows that it is not a good search experience and can be frustrating for users because they are expecting to see the content of the web page,”

After the 1st November, any site that ignore Google’s advice will no longer be considered, mobile-friendly. Which is a big factor in how Google decides which sites appear at the highly valuable spots at the top of the search rankings.

This stems from a study by the company that states how much people hate the ads! 69% of people who encounter them will leave the page completely compared to the 9% who actually decide to get the app.

Although, Google itself is not entirely exempt from these in-your-face pop ups, which one Twitter user documented:
